Dr. John Nye is a performer and educator living in Fairfax County, Virginia. John is the Band Director and Performing Arts Department Chair at Trinity Christian School in Fairfax, VA where he leads four different bands in grades four through twelve, and teaches AP Music Theory. He is also a brass instructor at the The Music Loft, located in Herndon, VA. As a performer in Northern Virginia, John is a founding member of two new ensembles, the Orange Line Brass and the Cherry Blossom Brass Band.
John has twice been a semifinalist in the graduate solo division of the National Trumpet Competition. He has performed at multiple festivals and conferences including the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, the International Trumpet Guild Conference, and the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival where he performed as principal trumpet with the festival orchestra.
As an avid orchestral and chamber musician, John has performed with the Charlottesville and Waynesboro Symphonies, and the Cincinnati Chamber Opera. As a chamber musician, John has performed with the Richmond Symphony Brass Quintet, Virginia Consort, Virginia Choral Society, the Madison Brass, and Caravanserai. John also has performed as principal trumpet with the Valley Wind Ensemble in Harrisonburg, VA and as a solo cornet with the Brass of the Potomac in Alexandria, VA.
In collaboration with Dr. Chris Carrillo at James Madison University, John has presented at multiple conferences including The International Trumpet Conference in Miami, FL and the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors Conference in Montevallo, AL.
John has always pursued both music performance and education, and has dedicated himself to providing high-quality instruction in the community. These endeavors have included brass quintet outreach concerts at various elementary schools throughout the Shenandoah Valley, instructor positions with summer music programs and marching band camps, instrument exhibitions on behalf of area middle schools, and adjudicator roles for county and district band events.
John earned a DMA in Trumpet Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature from James Madison University, a MM in Trumpet Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a BM in Music Education from James Madison University. John's former teachers include Chris Carrillo, Alan Siebert, Phil Collins, Jim Kluesner, and Robert Harold.
